Lake Erie Spring Walleye Report
The Lake Erie spring walleye bite is really heating up in the Island area reefs, jigging action is the best for post spawn Walleye in April, and trolling spoons as the water warms a little in May. Limits of 4 fish per angler are coming fast on the days when the wind and snow are not ripping up your shorts.
Even the trolling guys are catching early.
The Lake Erie Central Basin Walleye fishing off Eastlake, Mentor and Fairport Harbor should heat up in May. Usually after a hard winter these fish show up early and can be some of the hottest action of the year. I will target these Walleye with the usual assortment of Spoons and worm harnesses behind jet divers trolled off planer boards. Some of my favorite colored spoons this time of year would be hot colors green, orange and purples- Stingers Pooh Bear Purple, Green Froggy, Watermelon and similar colored Colorado blades for tying your own worm harnesses. There is a good assortment of custom colored blades to choose from at most tackle shops from holographic colors to just about any combination. Play around with different color combinations and beads and create your own secret weapon !! These large Walleye from the 2003 hatch should be mostly giants 30 inch + with a lot of younger class Walleye mixed in. The early season Walleye can be as close as 14 ft. of water so do not over look that. Troll at slows speeds to entice the behemoths around 1.5 mph. Keep up with the latest lake Erie Fishing reports as we will follow these fish further East to Geneva and Ashtabula as the water warms.
